Shrimp Moss "Subwassertang" (Lomariopsis lineata)

Subwassertang is a distinctive aquatic plant resembling liverwort, frequently confused with moss. Its natural, leafy form and minimal care requirements make it popular in shrimp tanks and aquascapes that aim for a serene, organic aesthetic.

Appearance:

Subwassertang forms loose, tangled clusters of translucent green fronds. Its texture is soft and slightly ruffled, with a leaf-like appearance rather than the thread-like growth of true mosses. It does not attach itself naturally, but can be tied or left as a floating mat.

Aquarium Use:

This plant is ideal for foreground placement, shrimp tanks, or as a free-floating mass in low-flow areas. It provides excellent cover for shrimp, fry, and microfauna. When anchored, it creates soft, cushiony accents in natural-style scapes.

Care Requirements:

Subwassertang thrives in low to medium light conditions and does not have specific requirements. The ideal temperature range is between 20 to 28°C (68 to 82°F), and it can tolerate a pH level from 6.0 to 7.5. Its growth rate is slow to moderate, and it benefits from clean, stable water conditions.

Additional Notes:

Although it is not a true moss, Subwassertang acts similarly in aquascaping. It does not naturally root or cling, so it needs to be secured or tied to hardscape for desired placement. Over time, it develops attractive, cloud-like clusters that can be trimmed and reshaped. Its durability and soft texture make it a popular choice for shrimp and low-tech tanks.
